Berntsen "Hearts" Surveyors

Like surveying itself, Berntsen has been around a long time.

Mount McKinley

Just a hike up the mountain . . .

“Thanks to the experienced mountaineers on the team, everyone made it back to camp. It was later learned that this was the worst storm of the summer season. It damaged tents of other climbing teams, causing them to retreat down the mountain for shelter and repairs. . .”

In our case, it’s 48 years this month, and we owe it all to surveyors.

Like surveyors, Berntsen cares about quality, accuracy and a job well done. We provide the quality products that help surveyors leave their mark, and we are thrilled to celebrate the stories they share with us. The book “Lasting Impressions – A Glimpse into the Legacy of Surveying” authored by our CEO, Rhonda Rushing, looks at the importance of surveying and the monuments that have a personal and lasting impact on people’s lives.

Surveying is a profession of historical and cultural significance, and this book shares firsthand stories from around the United States and beyond.

Supporting the profession of surveying

Timothy Brueggeman, surveying student, receives a scholarship check from Berntsen president, Mike Klonsinski at the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors annual meeting in January 2020.

Berntsen has provided many thousands of dollars in scholarship support over the years for promising students. Most recently, Dana Rose Londen of Klamouth Falls, Oregon was awarded the 2019 Berntsen International Scholarship in Surveying through the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) Foundation. Additionally, we support a range of state surveying organization scholarship funds across the country.

Earlier this month, the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors and Berntsen awarded a scholarship to Timothy Brueggeman for outstanding academic achievement and personal excellence.

In addition to scholarships, Berntsen supports state and national surveying organizations through membership, annual conference participation and publication advertising.

The Final Point Project

In partnership with NSPS, Berntsen offers the “Final Point” marker. This is a joint effort to build an endowment for surveying scholarships. At the same time, it’s an opportunity for surveyors to honor a colleague with a lasting monument.

Each marker is a beautifully engraved, solid 4” diameter bronze marker. It is personalized with the name of the surveyor being honored, with the latitude and longitude of his/her resting point. It is available with a high polish or brushed finish.

For every customized marker purchased, $25.00 is donated to the NSPS Foundation and $50.00 is donated to the Berntsen/NSPS Scholarship Fund.

Frank Lenik, PLS, as written a moving article entitled The Final Point that describes how he honored a friend and colleague through the Final Point Project.

The Future

This year, we’re expanding our support for prospective surveyors with the Young Surveyor Design Competition.

Youths aged 12-15 are invited to submit their designs for the “Surveying the Future 2020” medallion.  The winner (chosen by surveyors) will have their artwork immortalized on a brass medallion and receive a $300 check from Berntsen

We’re accepting designs until February 28th at midnight, so be sure and have your young surveyor submit their art!

Berntsen “hearts” surveyors and we look forward to helping surveyors leave their mark on the world.
